Who out there, has ever lost motivation? Have you felt like it’s not worth getting up early to workout, putting in time to prepare food etc?
I hope you’re raising your hand. Because my hand is in the air.
I know I personally had a problem with this and I was looking for a solution. I wanted to keep my motivation high, because I knew things took time… but it seemed like time was crawling!
If you feel the same, keep reading and you will some new ways to help you out with this idea. It’s once I realized the things that you’ll read below, that I was able to remain consistent and change happened.
It’s going to take time, I want you to know that. But if you stick with it, the motivation WILL come once you stop worrying about your results. Or, you could just give up and be where you were when you started. What do you chose?
Your Why
Let’s face it, every now and then even the most consistent and committed individuals can wake up and find themselves with little or no desire to workout that day. I am certainly no exception to that. There have been days that after my alarm goes off and I am still laying in bed, I consider turning over and dozing back off to sleep under the warmth of my comforter.
So what keeps me from hitting the snooze button and skipping my commitments?
For me, it is all about the goals that I have set for myself. I haven’t met them yet and I certainly won’t be getting any close to them if I were to stay in my bed more often than not. I’ve mentioned this several times in the past, you have to establish a “WHY”. A “WHY” that is so powerful that you won’t let yourself get derailed from reaching your goals. The power of your WHY is going to determine your success.
Motivation Is Not a Given
On any given day, the level of your own motivation can vary. Actually, there are a number of factors that can affect personal motivation; stress at work, stress at home, hectic schedules, etc…
Sometimes that WHY can be a BIG THING and it should be! It can take some time to make it to the finish line and the road that leads you there can and likely will be long and winding. Given that, you’ll want to setup some short-term goals that allow you to break down that larger goal into something that is much more obtainable. Reaching those smaller, albeit important, goals should not go unnoticed. For, it is without those smaller goals, you would not be able to reach you WHY!
Success is Not a Straight Line
Very rarely does everything go exactly as you planned it, this is especially true in our fitness journey’s
Check out the image below. The top-half of the image illustrates the path of how we think thing will will, even when we have all of the details planned out ahead of time. However, in reality (the bottom-half), there are always things that will challenge us along the way. Sometimes these challenges will totally derail us from our path and in some cases derail us so much that we have no choice but to start over with a new plan.
This should be expected and recognized! There will definitely be some days where you simply just don’t have “it” during your workout and there will be days that you just crush it! There will be days that you are on point with your nutrition and feeling awesome and then there will be days that you don’t plan ahead as well as you should have and bad nutrition choices result.
Staying consistent and true to your end goal(s) is the best advice that I can give you here – this will lead to sustainable results over time.
The Little Things Matter
That extra treat at the office, that “I’ll do it tomorrow” attitude, that 1 less rep in your workout. These are just a few examples of where the little things that you allow yourself to get away with can come back to have a profound effect on your results and/or progress.
Look, no one is perfect and perfection is not what I am asking of you.. However, when you aren’t paying attention to the little things, they will begin to add up. It is definitely easy to fool yourself into thinking that this “one little thing” won’t have a significant impact on my outcome and while this may be true on that given day or that specific week, eventually you will feel the negative impact in some way – I almost guarantee this!
The good news is that this is concept is also true on the positive side of your health and fitness! That one extra serving of fruits or veggies, that one or two extra seconds holding a stretching position, that decision to spend 10 minutes talking with your spouse or child instead of staring down at your phone. All of these little choices can lead to great things in time. Instead of trying to make big, drastic changes all at once, focus on doing some more of the little things that will instill positive habits over the course of time.
A couple of books that I highly recommend related to this topic; Jeff Olsen’s The Slight Edge and Darren Hardy’s The Compound Effect. Both of these are excellent reads that will really get you thinking about how the small seemingly insignificant decisions that you make on a day to day basis can have a profound impact on your over the course of time.
Surround Yourself
Nothing is more motivating than having a group of people that you interact with on a day to day basis to keep you moving towards your health and fitness goals! This is one of the reasons that I help start the Fit Men Movement. This is a new group that has a slightly different approach to helping member keep motivation high and interactions steady. Of course, there are topics of health and fitness, but there are also discussions about business, relationships and financial freedom on a daily basis.
Do you or perhaps someone you know need some additional support and accountability from a community of men? We are always looking for new members to join us in those conversations and would love to welcome you into the group!
