We are officially into the 3rd full week of January of 2016. This is typically about the time when the majority of those who set a resolution for the new year begin to fall off. The infographic below shows that nearly 50% of people have given up on their resolution within 6 weeks.
Many of you have probably set goals for yourself either to lose weight or get that elusive six-pack, or perhaps do both this year. However, some of you may have set some unrealistic goals for yourself and in doing so, only set yourself up for failure.
Unrealistic Goals
- Lose 30 lb. by the end of January
- Perform 100 consecutive push-ups after just two weeks
- Run your first full marathon in March
- Obtain a 6 pack by doing 500 crunches per day
The inability to achieve that goal can be upsetting and emotional for many, and it may even result in weight gain instead of weight loss.
So…How can you set some goals for 2016 that you’ll be able to stick to and ultimately accomplish? I have talked about goals and goal setting in the past and not much about what I have mentioned has changed. SMART goals are by far, the most effective ways to ensure success.
SMART Goals.
Reaching a personal goal will leave you with a feeling of accomplishment and also give you the confidence that you CAN set and achieve additional, even bigger goals for yourself. If you need a recap, check out the image below for what setting a SMART goal looks like and also check out this article on the breakdown for each part of the process. Setting SMART Goals
Set goals that are realistic, attainable and goals that will leave you with a feeling of accomplishment as you reach them. Here are some easy tips that will help you see the changes you desire in both your body and your confidence.
1. Start Small
Having big goals are awesome, but they can also seem overwhelming when you think about the work necessary to reach them. When you have a big goal, it is best to break it down into smaller, less daunting goals that allow you to see progress and realize success early and often. Before you realize it, you’ve accomplished all of the smaller goals that have lead you to reach that one big goal!
2. Create a Mental Picture
Visualize your future state. This one can be a tough one for some of you. I am not talking about using Photoshop or something like that… What I want you to do is; think about how accomplishing your goal will make you feel, how it will have an impact on your life! If weight loss is your goal, buy yourself an outfit that you want to look really good in, but can only make that happen once you’ve reached your weight loss goal. Keep it in a place that you will be able to see it often, a constant reminder of what you are working towards.
3. Remove Temptations
Get rid of the things you know won’t help you along the way. This one can be the simplest, yet most effective bit of advice I can give you. If you know that there are things that lead you down a path that will ultimately sabotage your journey – get rid of it! This can apply to anything, though most people have food-related temptations and those can be a slippery slope on their own. However, If you have a bad habit of plopping on the couch after work and just mindlessly watching TV – cancel your cable service. Identify the things in your life that aren’t benefiting you and simply stop doing them!
4. Start with a Trial
Before a long-term commitment, look for trial offers. Often times, you aren’t able to commit to something because of your fear of failure or lack of confidence in your ability to stick with it. Often, you aren’t even sure it will work for you. This is completely normal and can be overcome with some sort of trial of the service or product. Beachbody has this built into it’s products! With any fitness program or supplement, they offer at least 30 days to try it and if you aren’t happy with it, return it for a full refund – no questions asked!
You can even try the majority of the fitness programs right now, like today, with a free 30 day trial of Club Membership. The Club Membership gives you access to Beachbody On Demand – think Netflix for your workouts! Stream your workouts at anytime and from any device! You’ll be able to try out several of the most popular fitness programs to help you find the workout that fits you best.
5. Surround Yourself
Being around positive people can make a big difference. No one likes a “negative Nelly” and quite honestly it benefits no one! This is why it is so important to ensure that you have people supporting you throughout the process. Sticking to your resolutions is tough enough; the last thing you need is someone who is constantly reminding you that “it isn’t worth it” or “that stuff doesn’t work”. Having people that are like-minded and on a journey of their own is something you want and need!
