Insanity Certification
After much internal debate, I went through the Insanity Certification class at the end of October. I had been considering getting certified with P90X, but wasn’t sure how to go about implementing and leveraging that particular certification. I decided that the Insanity certification was something a bit more tangible for me to get my feet wet with leading others in a class format. Plus, I had the opportunity to go through the class with one of my fellow coaching teammates, so we would both get a chance to experience it together.
I clicked the “Complete Order” button earlier in the month and was excited to take this new journey on, despite never actually having gone through a full 60 days of the Insanity fitness program. I have done some of the workouts in the program and other fitness programs that the trainer, Shaun T., has lead such as; Insanity: The Asylum Volume 1 & 2 and Focus T25. With those programs in my past, I was definitely familiar with Insanity and Shaun T’s training style.
Insanity Certification was made available to the public in early 2013, so it’s a relatively new certification, but it is backed by the NASM organization. If you are already an NASM certified professional, you know that they are a leader in the fitness certification arena, so this certification does carry some distinction along with it.
Insanity Certification – The Class
Each Insanity Certification class is lead by an Insanity Master Trainer, in my case that was Julie Voris. She was a great trainer whom I had “known” through Team Beachbody, though not on a personal level. She is actually local to the Indianapolis area and leads Insanity classes, among others, at a YMCA here in town.
Upon arrival you are given a course manual along with a “goodie bag” which contained a few snacks, the Round 2 DVD and some other marketing materials.
The class, at least the one I attended, is broken down in the following format:
- 9:00 AM – Introductions and Overview
- 10:00 – Review of course manual
- 11:00 – Workout – 30 minute workout detailed below
- 12:00 – Lunch
- 1:00 – Fit Test
- 2:00 – Small group break out – student lead routines
- 3:00 – Workout – 30 minute workout detailed below
- 3:30 – Recovery and final review of material
- 4:00 – Test
- 5:00 PM – Wrap-up
Insanity Certification – The Workouts
The Insanity certification isn’t just a pop in a DVD from the fitness program and follow along. These are specific routines that have been developed to accommodate group fitness classes.
There are two formats; a 30 minute and a 50 minute class. Each class/workout is structured in the same format. The Insanity Certification team so far has made 3 Rounds of routines available, each following the same format but with a different series of exercises in the “Block”. This allows the instructors to keep the classes that are taught fresh as well as the participants to challenge themselves further as they progress with the program.
Insanity 30 Minute Class
- Warm-up
- Stretch
- Block 1 Exercises
- Power Move
- Block 2 Exercises
- Power Move
- Cook Down/Stretch
The 50 minute class has the same sequence as detailed above, however, it adds a 3rd block of exercises as well as some time for Ab work.
Insanity 50 Minute Class
- Warm-up
- Stretch
- Block 1 Exercises
- Power Move
- Block 2 Exercises
- Power Move
- Block 3 Exercises
- Abs
- Cook Down/Stretch
Insanity Certification – The Exam
After you have exhausted pretty much all of your energy in the 4 workouts, you are now ready to take the test on the course material. The exam is simply a test of your knowledge of the specific subjects that are discussed throughout the day as it relates to some of the key science/fact based topics. There are also questions related to the way the classes should be led. This is to ensure that all instructors are teaching the class in a consistent manner so that regardless of where you attend an Insanity class, you would be familiar with the format.
You aren’t given your results immediately, but based on your confidence level with how you answer the questions on the test, you should have a pretty good idea of whether or not you passed. I was pretty confident with all but 2 or 3 of my answers – so I had no doubt that I passed the exam.
About 10 days after I took the exam, I got the confirmation email that congratulated me on passing the certification and I was officially a Certified Insanity Instructor!
Insanity Pro Team
The Insanity Certification Pro Team is the membership side of being an Insanity instructor. It is not required, but does offer some benefits. There is a cost associated with Pro Team – $29.95/month. However, in my particular case there was a bonus/perk for joining on the day of my certification. Since it was the end of the quarter, I was able to sign up and get the Round 1 DVD (we received Round 2 that day) and then the following week I received Round 3 AND I’ll be getting Round 4 shortly since they are released once per quarter. Given all of that…it was kind of a no-brainer to go ahead and sign up. Will I keep paying the $29.95/month? Not sure – I’ve got it for 2 months – so I’ll see if the value is there before I decide to continue to membership.
Insanity Pro Team Benefits
- Online access to articles and videos about instruction, motivation, business and nutrition.
- Comprehensive marketing toolkit.
- Enhanced placement in the instructor finder tool.
- Exclusive discounts on re-certification.
- 25% savings on all previous Pro Team video releases.
- 10% discount on Insanity Certified Instructor apparel.

DetailsSummary
I am so glad that I went through the Insanity Certification – it was a pretty cool experience! The certification is valid for a 2 year period, after which I will be required to become re-certified. As I mentioned earlier, the certification just came out in early 2013, so no one has been required to complete the re-certification process yet – so I am not sure what that will entail.
While I don’t have any classes lined up to teach Insanity at this time, it is something that I am looking into and will definitely keep all of you posted on if/when those become available. So, if you are local to Indianapolis and are looking for a Certified Insanity Instructor – hit me up and let’s see if we can work together.
