Back in 2009, when I started on my journey, I was randomly assigned a Team Beachbody coach, but not once was I contacted by that “coach”. Now unfortunately, this happens from time to time as some coaches are not as engaged as others are and/or should be. Which is fine, but for the unlucky members that get assigned to these coaches, they are missing out on an important piece of that puzzle of the FITNESS + NUTRITION + SUPPORT = SUCCESS formula.
Can you guess which one?
After I went on my own for quite some time I decided to find a more active coach. One that was a more passionate and involved than my previous coach, and so I did just that.
Team Beachbody coaching is something that you want to be passionate about. People can tell when you are faking it, so you aren’t going to be able to fool too many people for very long, if you aren’t truly committed to it.
I think a lot of people get thrown off by the term “coach”. Some think that I am some kind of certified, accredited fitness professional, while others think that I actually show up at your home and well…”coach” you to get in shape. Well, unfortunately neither of those assumptions are correct.
The message I try to convey to people who ask about what I do as a coach, is something along the following.
As your coach, I will be here to help motivate and support you through your own fitness journey! I have been working out for several years and have done much research and have the knowledge to help many people with different goals. Through my own transformation, I have become passionate about what a great programs P90X and P90X2 are, and I am excited to help others transform their bodies and get passionate about them too!
The official mission statement of Team Beachbody is: “Help people achieve their goals and live a healthy, fulfilling life.”
Wow, that’s a pretty broad statement!
Yes it is, but it isn’t as simple as that statement makes it sound. As a coach, you need to really understand what those goals are, what they are trying to accomplish and ensure that they are making strides to reach those goals.
“What would you say…you do here?”
This is always a question that I get and sometimes, I don’t do the best job of answering it. I’ll try and describe the coaching responsibility here and hopefully it makes sense to you after reading through it.
Of course, your main focus, as a coach, is to help people identify what their health and fitness goals are and WHY those goals are important. The first part is usually easy…most people that you will talk to know that they should eat better and be more active. However, it is the reason WHY they need/want to do these things that is important! Everyone has a different WHY, but each one is so powerful in how it will affect and drive them to their health and fitness goals.
Once they have identified their WHY, then it’s your job, as a coach, to put a plan of action into place to get them moving in the right direction. That is where you would help them decide on a workout program that best fits into their goals and also factors in their personal preferences toward the type of workout they might enjoy.
All along the way, you will be there to provide them with motivation and support to keep them going and focused on their WHY. Advice on topics of nutrition, exercise or just getting started are provided whenever they are needed as well.
As a member of your team, all of this is provided at NO COST…FREE!
Why would I want to do all of this for FREE?
Well, as a coach you do get paid, but there’s more to it than just a member sending you a check. Actually, it doesn’t work that way at all, your team members NEVER pay you anything for your time and service. However, as you work with your team and provide advice, support and recommendations, your team members may purchase products and you will receive a commission on whatever product the team member buys.
The team member is paying the exact same amount whether or not they had a coach, it is the retail cost of the product. There is no additional fee added into the cost of the product to cover the cost of all of that stuff I mentioned above.
Let’s look at an example, shall we?
Assume that you are a coach and have been rocking P90X for the past couple of months and your co-worker takes notice and starts a conversation about it. You naturally discuss the program as you have experienced it and suggest that your co-worker start the program with you as their coach. This way they can interact with you daily and get any questions that he/she might have along the way.
The co-worker signs up for a FREE Team Beachbody account and purchases P90X at the same retail price ($119.95) as anyone else would wanting to purchase the program. For your referral, Beachbody will pay you a 25% commission on that purchase, which comes out to about $29.99. So you can see that it is Beachbody reducing the amount of revenue that they take it and giving you that 25%.
Pretty cool huh?
Another form of compensation is related to having additional coaches on your team and introduce them to same opportunity that was provided to you. So, as your team grows, you have the opportunity to earn what is referred to as a cycle bonus. I won’t delve into the complexities here, but the concept is that if you don’t help the coaches on your team become successful, then you yourself will not be maximizing potential.
This may sound like a conflict of interest to some. But generally speaking most of the other coaches that I know were just simply team members at one time. They went through all of the struggles and soreness and pain of their respective workout program just like you and I. During that time, they had the guidance of their own coach leading them through all of that. It is only then that you truly see and know the value of having a coach that is as committed to helping you succeed as it is that you are committed to the program in return. So in that respect, becoming a coach for most people is just a natural progression of the process. You have seen just what kind of impact your coach has made, not only on you, but to others around him/her and you feel compelled to return that favor to others that you KNOW are in need of the same kind of help.
Lastly, and this is the most rewarding recognition as a coach, a member on your team may have had such great success with his/her workout program that they could win either a monthly, quarterly or annual contest. Of course, the team member gets the prize money, but you get the recognition of helping them achieve that goal and Beachbody again rewards you for that.
I bet you get free products
Actually, not true… I don’t receive any products or product samples from Beachbody, unless I pay for them. I do get a discount of 25% on all of my purchases, but NO FREEBIES!
So, what is the potential here?
To use an old cliche…”Sky’s the limit”, that is really no joke. Of course, I am not there…YET. I still have a full time job and work about 40-50 hours a week at that job. But there are many coaches that do this full time, set their own hours and work from where ever they happen to be that day! The potential of this opportunity is entirely what you make of it. Some people want to just make enough to cover their costs of a new program here and there and Shakeology. That’s great! While, others want to maximize the potential and are earning nearly $80,000 a month!
Now, as with anything, you get out, what you put in. What that means is that if you are expecting to just start-up being a coach and watch the paychecks rolling in, that isn’t going to happen. You still have to put in the effort and time, just like any other business to succeed or your workout program. How much time, again is entirely up to you and what it is you want to achieve.
But, I am not really qualified…am I?
This is a common concern for many people. I don’t consider myself to be a nutrition expert or a license trainer of any kind. And quite honestly, I don’t think other people expect that of me. What is important is that you know you are not alone and Beachbody provides many tools and resources that are made available to you on day 1. These tools and resources come in the form of online training, Facebook groups, reference materials on particular products and access to detailed videos for information on products and programs that you currently may be unfamiliar with.
In addition to all of that, you’ll have full access to me and other members of my team for support and questions about anything related to Beachbody. While, I am not available 24/7, I would be available via email, cell phone, txt or chat to answer question, simple or complex.
Isn’t this just one of those pyramid schemes?
Let’s think about that statement for just a minute… Per Wikipedia, a pyramid scheme is defined as the following:
“A non-sustainable business model that involves promising participants payment or services, primarily for enrolling other people into the scheme, rather than supplying any real investment or sale of products or services to the public.”
That statement would suggest that I, the participant, was promised payment for recruiting others to do what I do, help people reach their health and fitness goals (which I do just about everyday), and in return those recruited would get nothing in return.
OK…just how gullible do you think that I am?
Aren’t pyramid schemes illegal? Yes, of course they are!
I was never promised any amount of money to become a Team Beachbody coach and I have never tried to assume that statement with anyone that has made the decision to join me team.
Beachbody and Team Beachbody have been admirable, well respected and profitable companies for over 5 years. I would think that with the number of coaches that are out there today (70,000+), if there were anything illegal going on they would have been shut down long before I arrived on the scene.
Here’s a short video that illustrates a common ignorance that most people have when it comes to network marking companies such as Team Beachbody.
The video below does an awesome job of providing you with some insight into the true meaning of being a Team Beachbody coach and why it is I do what I do each and everyday.
For me, the Team Beachbody coaching opportunity has been a blast. I’ve met a ton of awesome people and been able to be a part of their journey to a healthier life style. It is really rewarding to hear all of the stories of people that have committed to something for as little as 90 days and it has completely changed their lives. And while, there is certainly some financial advantages to becoming a Team Beachbody coach, it isn’t the driving force behind what I do each and everyday. Remember that mission statement from above, well, it really it encompass what it means to be a coach!
