You’re busy…I get it! Very few people are truly as busy as they think they are or try to convey to others. You may feel like there simply isn’t enough time in the day to get it all done, until you catch a glimpse into the hectic schedule of someone who is REALLY BUSY.
Check out the video below of Gary Vaynerchuk. This guy runs a few incredibly successful companies and despite the 5:00 AM – 12:00 AM daily schedule that he maintains, he still makes time, in all of that hustle and bustle, to workout.
Why??
Ultimately, the decision to make fitness a priority in your life is just that; a decision. This is a decision that YOU have to make for yourself, I can’t make that decision for you nor can anyone else… However, once you have made that decision and made the commitment to yourself, honor it and do whatever it takes to stick to it on a consistent basis.
For me, as you will see below, that means 1st thing in the morning. I have found that I am just more consistent in being able to get my workouts in when they are in the AM before anything else can derail my day. There are very few situations that have come up while everyone else is sleeping that would prevent me from working out. If that works for you – awesome! The key is to find a time during your day that is going to allow you to make it happen as consistently as possible (I know…broken record…).
Once you have your workout window identified, you have to make sure that you are focused as much as possible during that time – distractions can lead to sub-par workouts.
If you workout at home and it’s possible, find an area in your home that will allow you to get in and get out within 60 minutes – much more than that and you are likely just being inefficient. If you have kids, I can totally understand how this may seem tough, if not impossible. Interruptions are bound to happen here and there, but try to minimize them when you can. Let everyone know that you are about to workout and need x minutes to focus and could use everyone’s help in allowing that to happen.
How I Make it Work
During the work-week, the alarm on my Fitbit buzzes at 4:20 AM and for the most part, I roll out of bed at that time. Occasionally, I will fall back asleep, but my 4:35 AM alarm is always there to remind me to “GET UP!“.
4:30-5:00 AM
I am prepping my breakfast and planning my attack on the day. Lately, breakfast has been pretty much the same exact meal for the past 3-4 months – 2 whole eggs, egg whites, and 2 pieces of whole wheat toast. I will occasionally substitute a large bowl of oatmeal with some fresh fruit.
5:00-5:45 AM
During this 45 minute time period, I am mostly getting “business” done. This would include catching up on communications with customers, writing new blog posts (like this one…), continuing my nutrition certification education, finding awesome content to share with my team, or sometimes I am just simply getting some of the mundane stuff that comes along with running your own business done…
5:45-7:00 AM
Workout Time! I know a lot of people can literally dread this time, but I revel in it. This is my time to work on me and I really enjoy it. Sure, some days are harder than others, but you have to anticipate those days and sometimes just grind it out to get through. I always have my workouts planned in advance. This allows me to know exactly what I have planned for that session and get started, focus the entire time and get everything done in an efficient manner.
7:00-7:30 AM
Post workout nutrition. After a great lifting session, there is nothing more refreshing than the 1st Phorm Ignition & Phormula 1 stack. I’ve been using this post-workout stack since early February and can definitely tell a difference in my recovery time following a grinding workout. Also by this time, the kiddos are almost certain to be awake and asking me to prepare breakfast for them.
7:30-8:00 AM
Time to clean up! After a quick shave and shower, I gotta get dressed and start prepping my nutrition for the day. You have probably seen several of those meal prep photos where they have every meal of everyday of the week all laid out on Sunday evening, right…? Well…I rarely am that organized. In fact, I am always behind at this point in my morning…
8:00-8:45 AM
Commute to work. This is pretty hit and miss. Some days it may only take me 20 minutes to travel the 18 miles to work, other days can push the 45 minute time frame… I dread those days. Luckily, they don’t occur too often and in fact some days my commute time is 0 as I have the luxury of being able to telecommute as needed.
8:45-4:30 PM
Work. For those of you who don’t know me that well, I work in the IT (Information Technology) world and really enjoy it! My official title is Sr. Software Engineer; sounds prestigious right…? Basically, I solve business related problems by creating software. Software that runs on your computer (application) or from a website. It’s a pretty fast paced environment and each day presents a new challenge, so it keeps me engaged and my skills sharp.
4:30-5:00 PM
Commute home. Blah…sometimes this is the leave enjoyable part of my day…
5:00-8:00 PM
Family time.
8:00-10:30 PM
Personal interest time, additional business time.
Recap
Try not to over-complicate this – If you want it bad enough, you will find an hour in your day!
FYI: On the weekends, things are a little more laid back, unless I know I need to be somewhere or have several things on my agenda for the day and want to get an early start.
