Recently, my coach and good friend, Wayne Wyatt reached out to me and asked if I would share my story for an article he wanted to publish on his site, TeamRipped.com. In the article, I answered several questions about my journey to date and it allowed me a chance to reflect on just how far I’ve come. You can read the full article by clicking the button below.
After that article was posted, I realized that some of you may not know my entire story or know how/where I got started. So, with that in mind, I thought I would post a similar article here on Your Fitness Path to give everyone an update on my progress to date.
I still have those Day 1 before and Day 90 after photos that were taken back in 2009 and every time that I open those up and look at them, I am always kind of taken back at a few things:
- Just how scrawny and weak looking I was.
- How I thought I was “in good shape”.
- The importance of taking before and after photos.
The term/phrase “skinny fat” always comes to mind when I look back at those photos. Back in 2009, I didn’t have a significant weight problem, but I also had very little, if any, muscle mass/definition. This was one of the driving factors in why I started on my fitness journey at that time. I knew that I didn’t like the body that I saw in the mirror and I also had a serious lack of confidence whenever I had my shirt off.
Day 1 – Day 90
Here are those original Day 1 to Day 90 before and after photos. Despite the not so happy look on my face in the day 90 photo, I was really proud of the results that I had gotten in those initial 90 day with P90X. It had really just sparked a passion for living a fit and healthy lifestyle that I still have to this day.
90 Day Transformation Video
After I completed those first 90 days, I thought it would be a cool to put together a video to document my transformation. Check out the video below.
Along the Way…
Of course, I didn’t just stop after the first 90 days…I kept going – I wanted more! In my mind, I still lacked the muscle mass that I desired, but I was ignorant as to how to really make that happen.
I continued with the P90X program for a few more rounds after that first attempt and while I continued to see results, I needed more variety, boredom was beginning to set in.
I had never been a “gym goer” and I really didn’t want to try and figure out how to manage fitting the extra time commitment that would entail on top of my normal “dad duties”. Luckily for me, a new fitness program, P90X2, was set to be released in late 2011 and this fueled additional excitement with the journey I was on.
P90X2 Results – $1500 Richer
I safely say that at the time and mostly to this day, P90X2 was my favorite program! It was just my style of fitness and that allowed me to really commit and strive for my best results.
During this time, I fostered several new relationships through an online Facebook group and we all pushed and motivated each other for every workout. To this day, the friends that I made during that time remain some of my closest friends and we are all still connected and continue to go through fitness programs as a group.

How I Added 10# of Lean Muscle Mass.
The goal of adding lean muscle mass is still, to this day, my primary objective. Despite that, I still hadn’t really increased my total body weight all that much. I definitely had some major body recomposition by this time, but I still lacked the dense muscle mass that I was after, particularly in my chest and back.
In the fall of 2012, I started a mass gainer program where the primary focus was to do just that; increase lean muscle mass.
With the Body Beast program, I was able to literally add 10 pounds of lean muscle mass over the course of 90 days! I was thrilled with my progress/results with this program. Not only that, but I found out that I really enjoyed this style of fitness. I was really hooked on the Body Beast program which had specific muscle group focused workouts and I became more and more intrigued with body building in general.
A Physique Competitor?!?!?
If you had asked me back in 2009 if I ever thought I would step on a stage as a physique competitor, I probably would have laughed in your face and said “No way! Not is a million years!” However, in the summer of 2014 and again in the spring of 2015, I did exactly that!
Was is tough? Heck yes – but when you set a goal like this and actually start down that path, you will find the drive and determination to give it everything you’ve got! I had a ton of support along the way and all of that support kept me pushing and moving forward when it was really tough to do so. It was a great experience! While I can’t say for certain that I will do this again, I am really grateful for having gone through the process and experience!

Where I’m at Currently
That brings us to 2016 and where I am today…
What’s New?
Same goals…new process! Over the last 18 months I’ve been incorporating a lot more power lifting (bench, squat, and deadlift) in my routine. I’ll usually spend roughly 30 minutes on one or more of those exercises (or variations) and then hit one of the Beachbody workouts, currently Hammer and Chisel.
Day 1 – Day 2500
To give you guys an idea of where I am at today, I took some updated photos. I took the photos on the right earlier last week and thought it would be interesting to put them side-by-side with my original Day 1 photos. Honestly, I was pretty shocked with the differences.
I have said this before and constantly tell the people that I work with that taking before photos is super important! It is so hard to see the changes that occur in our own bodies. Having those photos to compare can really open your eyes to the progress that you have made. Obviously, there is a pretty large time difference in the photos above, but that doesn’t minimize the importance of taking those photos.
