What is HIIT?
HIIT, or high-intensity interval training, is a training technique in which you give all-out, one hundred percent effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise, followed by short, sometimes active, recovery periods. This type of training gets and keeps your heart rate up and burns more fat in less time.
HIIT Benefits
What are the actual benefits of HIIT workouts?
Why should you consider a HIIT workout as an alternative to LISS (Low Intensity Steady State) workouts?
- Quick but highly effective! You’ll expend more energy in less time!
- HIIT has been shown to burn more calories and fat than traditional cardio for full 24 hours by putting your body into “afterburn” or EPOC where it requires more oxygen (and thus more calories) for recovery!
- HIIT can be done at home or anywhere without any equipment by using plyometric exercises.
- No skinny-fat syndrome! HIIT workouts preserve muscle while burning fat to give you the best results possible.
- HIIT allows you to incorporate strength training into rest periods to get even better results and make the most of your time!
What Is The Best HIIT Workout?
That is kind of a loaded question and really doesn’t have a wrong answer. As long as your HIIT workout is inline with what is mentioned above and below in the example, you are going to have a great workout!
That being said, there are some Beachbody workout programs that utilize HIIT as its main form of exercise and I have listed those below. The great thing about all of these workouts is that they all offer something for everyone and stick to a 30 minute workout window, so there is no excuse to you not making it happen!

Sample HIIT Workout
The format of a HIIT workout is pretty much the same; 30 seconds of high intensity followed by 60-90 seconds of rest. The duration of the workout can vary, but anywhere from 15-30 minutes is typical.
To give you a better idea of what your typical HIIT workout might look like, I found a pretty good example of one the PopSugar website. The next time your are in a pinch for time and want to make the most of the time you have available, give this one a try!
